How to Protect Smartphones from Spyware: Essential Tips and Clarifications

Spyware applications provide full access to the data on targeted smartphones, including emails, phone calls, location data, photos, videos, and app usage. In some cases, they can even remotely activate the camera and microphone, according to a report by the German news agency.

Spyware Availability

The German Consumer Protection Portal “Mobile Sicher.de” explained that spyware applications, known as “Stalkerware,” are no longer available on official app stores. However, they can still be obtained directly from the developers’ websites.

When installed, these apps rely on the terms of use clauses to legally protect the developers. Once configured, spyware allows monitoring of everything happening on the targeted phone, either through a dedicated app on the controller’s phone or via the developer’s web portal. However, the spy must first install the app on the targeted device.

Device Protection Measures

  • Apple Devices: Apple has completely banned spyware installation on its latest devices, while this capability remains very limited on older devices.
To protect against such apps, “Mobile Sicher.de” recommends using a strong screen lock, securing your Apple ID with a complex password, and avoiding sharing account information with others.
If someone gains access to your Apple ID and password, they can infiltrate the iCloud service, enabling them to spy on call logs, photos, and location data.
  • Android Devices: Spyware can generally be installed on Android phones. However, the “Play Protect” antivirus program alerts users to such apps as malicious software. It is advisable to regularly activate this program and perform comprehensive scans of the device.

Tips to Protect Smartphones

The German Consumer Protection Portal provided a set of recommendations to avoid falling victim to spyware:

  1. Use a Strong Screen Lock: Ensure your smartphone is secured with a strong and complex screen lock, even when at home.
  2. Be Cautious with Gifted Phones: Gifted smartphones might come pre-installed with spyware. Some companies even sell devices with such software already installed.
  3. Activate “Play Protect”:
    • Open the Google Play Store.
    • Click on the account icon in the upper right corner.
    • Select “Play Protect” and ensure it is activated to scan the phone.
  4. Secure Google and iCloud Accounts:
    • Protect these accounts with strong passwords.
    • Never share access details with anyone, as they can unlock sensitive data.

Conclusion

Spyware poses a significant threat to smartphone privacy, whether on Apple or Android devices. While official apps aim to provide protection, user awareness and proactive security measures remain the first line of defense against these harmful programs.
