A huge hack shakes the digital currency market, the largest hacking operation this year
One of the largest cryptocurrency heists of the year occurred in the blockchain-based game industry, where a hacker stole $63 million from a game relying on blockchain technology.
The incident was announced by the game “Axie Infinity” in a post on its website on Wednesday, stating its intention to temporarily halt transactions. Blockchain specialist company “Pixelcraft” explained that the intruder stole 17,400 tokens of the Ethereum currency, valued at approximately $63 million at current prices.
“Axie Infinity” aims to incentivize players by nurturing unique digital creatures or farming them for rewards. Earlier this week, the project announced that the cryptocurrency value in the protocol had exceeded $80 million.
The security breach has sparked speculation about the entity behind the attack, but assumptions pointing to rogue developers or North Korean hackers have not been confirmed.
On the other hand, the North Korean hacking unit, known as the “Lazarus Group,” led another breach resulting in the theft of approximately $600 million from blockchain technology supporting the game “Axie Infinity.”
The security incident underscores the importance of securing digital assets, as the industry suffered losses of approximately $1.8 billion last year due to security vulnerabilities, highlighting the necessity to enhance security efforts in this sector.
