Chinese Breakthrough Enables EV Charging in Just 5 Minutes

Chinese automaker BYD has unveiled a new ultra-fast battery charging technology that can recharge electric vehicles in just five minutes—roughly the same time it takes to refuel a conventional gasoline car, according to a report by the Financial Times.

The new system, branded “Flash Charging,” allows charging performance to vary depending on the battery’s initial level. If the battery starts at صفر، it can reach up to 70% capacity within five minutes, and achieve a full 100% charge in about 12 minutes—even under low-temperature conditions.

This advancement is attributed to BYD’s next-generation battery technology, developed over six years following the launch of its first high-performance battery platform.

Debut in Premium Model with 800 km Range

BYD plans to introduce this technology لأول مرة in its upcoming model Z9GT, part of its luxury sub-brand Denza. The vehicle is designed to compete directly with high-end European cars.

The Z9GT is expected to offer a driving range of approximately 800 kilometers and is likely to launch in European and global markets in the coming weeks, as part of BYD’s aggressive international expansion strategy.

Charging Speed Seen as Key to EV Adoption

Industry reports, including from Reuters, highlight that charging time remains one of the biggest barriers to widespread electric vehicle adoption, with some models still requiring up to 45 minutes even with fast-charging systems.

To address this, BYD is also investing heavily in charging infrastructure, aiming to deploy around 20,000 fast-charging stations worldwide by the end of this year.

Through this strategy, the company seeks to replicate the success of Tesla, whose global expansion was significantly driven by its extensive fast-charging network—before being overtaken by BYD as the world’s top-selling electric vehicle manufacturer.
