Germany Announces €65 Million Development Package to Support Ghana’s Renewable Energy and Digital Transition

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has announced that Germany will provide €65 million (approximately $69 million) in development assistance to Ghana, aimed at supporting projects in renewable energy, industrialization, and digital transformation.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Accra alongside Ghanaian President John Mahama, Steinmeier emphasized that the initiative reflects the strength of bilateral relations between the two countries, reaffirming Berlin’s commitment to promoting stability and sustainable development in West Africa.
“This is a tangible example of our shared approach,” Steinmeier said. “Germany, in partnership with the European Union, supports the Ghanaian government’s efforts to achieve long-term stability and development.”
Security in West Africa at the Forefront
For his part, President Mahama noted that the discussions addressed key regional security concerns, particularly the growing threats of terrorism, extremism, and political instability in the Sahel region.
He highlighted Ghana’s proactive diplomatic efforts aimed at strengthening dialogue, building trust, and deepening cooperation with neighboring countries.
Mahama also praised Germany’s support for reforming global governance structures, urging the international community to take concrete steps toward making the UN Security Council more representative and democratic.
“Ghana calls on all nations to move beyond rhetoric and take meaningful action to ensure a more legitimate and inclusive Security Council,” he stated.
A Green Agenda and Broader Partnership
Steinmeier’s three-day state visit included high-level meetings with Ghanaian officials, during which both sides discussed multiple priority areas.
With the new funding, Germany aims to advance Ghana’s green industrialization agenda, support sustainability goals, and expand bilateral cooperation in trade, technology, and regional stability, paving the way for a deeper and more dynamic partnership in the years ahead.
