Mauritanian Parliament President Meets Committee on Missing Journalist Issak Ould Mokhtar, Emphasizes Commitment to Humanitarian Efforts

The President of the Mauritanian Parliament, Mohamed Ould Mektar, received the unified committee for monitoring and coordinating the case of the missing journalist in Syria, Issak Ould Mokhtar, on Friday, describing the meeting as “fruitful.”

In a statement issued by the committee, they highlighted the latest developments concerning the case, as well as the ongoing efforts being made to follow up on this humanitarian issue. The President of the Parliament was also informed about recent news regarding the safety of journalist Issak Ould Mokhtar and his captivity by armed groups in northern Syria.

The committee’s head, Dr. Abdel Rahmane Harma Bibana, expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the President of the Parliament for receiving the committee and his personal interest in the case. He emphasized the committee’s and the national public’s hope for the establishment of a national parliamentary committee focused on national and humanitarian issues, especially the case of journalist Issak Ould Mokhtar.

Dr. Bibana explained that this initiative reflects the vision of President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani and his repeated directives to prioritize citizens’ issues, particularly humanitarian cases that are a central focus of his electoral program, “My Aspirations for the Nation.”

The committee reported that the President of the Parliament affirmed his commitment to this important humanitarian issue and praised the significant efforts being made by the committee. He also confirmed that the Mauritanian Parliament, under his leadership and that of its members, shares the same feelings and hopes with the committee and the family of journalist Issak Ould Mokhtar, wishing for his safe and swift return to his family, colleagues, and homeland.

It is noteworthy that journalist Issak Ould Mokhtar was kidnapped in Syria on October 15, 2013, while covering the unfolding events for the Emirati channel “Sky News Arabia.”
