Nouadhibou: A Technical Workshop to Raise Awareness Among Stakeholders in the Informal Sector About Labor Systems

The Deputy Commissioner for Human Rights, Humanitarian Affairs, and Civil Society Relations, Mr. Al-Rassoul Ould Al-Khal, along with the Assistant Governor of Dakhlet Nouadhibou, Mr. Mohamed Abdelwahab Ould Mohamed Fadel, presided over the opening of a technical workshop today, Thursday, in Nouadhibou, aimed at raising awareness among actors in the informal sector about labor systems and the National Strategy for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights 2024-2028.

During this one-day workshop, three presentations will be made: the first on Mauritania’s international commitments in the field of labor; the second on the national legal framework for combating human trafficking and migrant smuggling; and the third and final one on the rights and duties of informal sector workers under labor law.

In his speech, the Deputy Commissioner explained that this workshop is part of the implementation of the National Strategy for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, which was endorsed by the government. The strategy reflects a comprehensive Mauritanian vision based on the country’s international commitments in the areas of social justice, citizenship, and strengthening the rule of law, in line with the noble directives of His Excellency President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani and his relentless efforts to uphold human dignity.

He noted that the purpose of this meeting is to raise participants’ awareness of labor legislation in Mauritania and enhance the awareness of informal sector workers regarding labor systems and their rights, with the aim of reducing exploitation, promoting equality, and ensuring human dignity.

For her part, the Deputy Mayor of Nouadhibou, Mrs. Maanah Bent El-Chakkar, praised the significant efforts made by the high authorities to strengthen the legal system for human rights, wishing the participants in the workshop success and prosperity.

The opening of the workshop was attended by the Wali of Nouadhibou, Mr. Sid Ahmed Ould Ahbib, the Director of Human Rights, the Regional Delegate of the Commission for Human Rights, Humanitarian Affairs, and Civil Society Relations, the mayors of the municipalities of Boulenouar, Anwal, and Nwamegar, along with some civil society actors.
