Nouadhibou: Awareness Day on the Codification of Tax and Customs Exemptions
The Ministry of Budget, under the Ministry of Economy and Finance, in partnership with the World Bank, organized an awareness day in Nouadhibou today, focusing on the codification of tax and customs exemptions.
The workshop was attended by customs intermediaries, office heads, inspection teams, and customs units from the Dakhlet Nouadhibou region.
Dah Ould Ahmed, the Central Inspector and Acting Regional Director of Customs, stated that this awareness day, dedicated to the codification of tax and customs exemptions, represents a fundamental step in ongoing efforts to modernize customs administration and enhance its transparency and efficiency.
He emphasized that the topic extends beyond technical concerns, being a strategic focus aimed at improving exemption management by addressing three primary issues. The first is enhancing transparency in financial exemptions by establishing a robust regulatory framework that stakeholders can easily access and understand. The second is aligning with international standards, ensuring the country meets its commitments to global partners such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), while adhering to best global practices. The third goal is improving oversight and administrative efficiency by codifying and standardizing exemptions to bolster monitoring processes, reduce fraud risks, and enhance the effectiveness of tax and customs systems.
The Acting Regional Director highlighted that this reform was made possible through close collaboration among the various stakeholders. He noted that the specialized committee has developed a comprehensive methodology, including the classification and integration of exemptions into the SYDONIA system, to ensure smooth and effective implementation.
Participants in the awareness day will attend presentations by customs experts and officials, showcasing the importance of the new system for codifying tax and customs exemptions.
