Scientific Study Warns: Excessive Support in Sports Bras May Harm the Back

A recent study published in the European Journal of Sport Science has warned that sports bras offering excessive support may actually harm the back rather than provide the intended protection—particularly during running.
The study utilized an innovative full-body model for women, developed by researchers to analyze the impact of different support levels provided by sports bras on the musculoskeletal system during running. This model is the first of its kind capable of accurately measuring the rotational forces acting on the spine, which directly affect the muscles of the back and torso during dynamic movement.
Simulation results revealed that bras which completely restrict breast movement—those classified as offering very high support—significantly increase the load on the spine, especially in the lower lumbar region. The study cautioned that this type of repeated pressure could elevate the risk of back pain, particularly during intensive or frequent training sessions that demand greater physical effort and upper body motion.
In light of these findings, researchers recommended that athletic women choose sports bras that strike a balance between stability and flexibility—providing adequate breast support without restricting natural body movement or placing additional strain on the spine.
They emphasized that the goal should be to minimize breast movement in a way that ensures comfort and protection, but without overly constraining movement, which could disrupt physical balance and increase back stress.
