There were many speculations suggesting that Barcelona wanted to offload Gündogan to ease the wage bill, but Laporta clarified that this was not the case.
During a press conference, Laporta stated, “The decision was made purely for sporting reasons and exclusively so.”
He added, “After a meeting with Hansi Flick (the coach) and evaluating the team’s situation, it was decided that he wanted to leave. It was a purely sporting decision.”
Laporta continued, “I have heard that it was due to financial reasons, but no, it was a sporting decision made by Barcelona, Gündogan, and Manchester City.”
He concluded, “After signing Dani Olmo, Gündogan’s role was no longer clear, as they play in the same position. He is a great person and an excellent player.”
Gündogan, who returned to Manchester City this season, had initially wanted to stay at Barcelona but agreed to leave after discussions with German coach Hansi Flick, who indicated that Gündogan would not be a regular starter next season.
Flick decided not to rely on Gündogan due to the crowded midfield with Spaniards Dani Olmo, Pedri, and Fermín López.
Gündogan’s salary significantly increased during his second season at Barcelona, leading the club to welcome his departure as it would relieve financial constraints and facilitate the registration of new players.
Gündogan joined Barcelona in the summer of 2023 and made 51 appearances across all competitions, scoring 5 goals and providing 14 assists.
