Infantino Condemns Threats Against Mexican Referee Katia García and Expresses Full FIFA Support

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed his full support for Mexican referee Katia Itzel García and the Mexican Football Federation after she revealed receiving online abuse and death threats following her officiating in a Leagues Cup match in North America.

García, an experienced official who has refereed in men’s competitions such as Liga MX, the Gold Cup, and the Olympic Games, reported receiving threats after officiating last Thursday’s match between FC Cincinnati and CF Monterrey, which ended in a 3-2 win for the American side.

Her decision to validate a goal for Cincinnati — which some fans believed was offside — sparked outrage among Monterrey supporters, leading to a wave of hostile and threatening messages on social media.

Infantino addressed the incident in a post on his official Instagram account on Monday, stating:

“I am shocked and saddened by the threats made against referee Katia Itzel following her performance in the Leagues Cup Round One match between Monterrey and Cincinnati. There is no place for abuse, discrimination, or violence of any kind in football or in society.”

He added:

“At FIFA, we stand in full solidarity with the Mexican Football Federation and CONCACAF in condemning the actions of those who made these unacceptable threats. We offer our unwavering support to ensure those responsible are held accountable.”

The Mexican Football Federation also issued a statement on Saturday, affirming its support for García and stating that it will provide her with legal advice and assistance in filing a formal complaint with the appropriate authorities.
