Messi Considering Leaving Inter Miami in December to Prepare for 2026 World Cup — Barcelona the Likely Destination

Argentinian legend Lionel Messi may leave Inter Miami as early as December to prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with reports suggesting that a return to FC Barcelona is the most likely scenario.

Although Messi is under contract with Inter Miami until December 2025, recent reports from Argentina indicate he could depart temporarily in January 2026 to play in a more competitive league during the final six months before the World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

MLS Schedule Presents a Challenge

One key issue is the structure of Major League Soccer (MLS), which runs from winter through fall, unlike the international football calendar that aligns with the European schedule. While MLS is reportedly considering adjusting its calendar to match FIFA’s global structure, that change won’t take effect until at least 2027.

Under the current format, Inter Miami’s season is expected to end in early December—assuming they reach the playoff final—while the next campaign wouldn’t begin until late February. This gap creates a window for Messi to seek a short-term loan move.

A Return to Europe or South America?

According to various reports, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner is exploring options in Europe or South America to maintain high-level match fitness ahead of the World Cup. This strategic move would allow him to stay in peak physical and competitive condition.

ESPN journalist Esteban Edul revealed that contract renewal talks between Messi and Inter Miami stalled earlier this week, fueling speculation that a move could be imminent.

Rumors of a return to Barcelona have intensified, especially after the club failed to re-sign him in 2021 due to financial constraints, despite preparing a short-term six-month contract. Spanish newspaper Marca reported that Messi still hopes for a farewell match at Camp Nou — a dream he’s openly expressed in several interviews.

In an earlier conversation with Simplemente Fútbol, Messi stated, “I wanted to return, but it wasn’t possible.” He has repeatedly expressed his deep emotional connection to the city of Barcelona, where he plans to live after retirement.

Other Possible Destinations

Another potential destination mentioned in reports is Newell’s Old Boys, Messi’s boyhood club in Argentina, where he began his career before joining Barcelona.

Additionally, some sources suggest Messi may consider a short-term loan to a major Premier League club in early 2026. Such a move would allow him to participate in high-intensity matches and ensure he is in optimal form for the World Cup.
