Mexican Boxer Pedro “Tony” Rodriguez Dies Hours After Losing Bout in Arizona

Mexican professional boxer Pedro Antonio “Tony” Rodriguez has died at the age of 37, just hours after losing a fight at the American Royal Palace in Phoenix, Arizona.
Rodriguez was found dead in his hotel room on Sunday morning following a unanimous decision loss to undefeated opponent Philip Villa (4-0) in a six-round bout. The event, titled “Rumble in the Barrio,” was sanctioned by the Arizona State Boxing & MMA Commission and promoted by Del Sol Boxing Promotions.
According to reports, Rodriguez returned to his hotel room after the fight with plans to have dinner with fellow boxers. However, hotel staff discovered him unresponsive the next morning. The cause of death has not yet been determined, and police investigations are ongoing.
Rodriguez’s wife, Karla Valenzuela, shared insight into his final moments, stating:
“He called me after the fight and even after the show ended when he got back to the hotel. We had a video call. He told me he was going out to buy dinner and would return soon because they were heading to the airport at 3:30 a.m. That was the last thing he said to me. I don’t know what happened after that.”
Rodriguez’s opponent, Philip Villa, posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, saying:
“I was deeply saddened to hear the news. I’m grateful to have shared the ring with Pedro for six rounds. My prayers are with him and his family. Rest in peace, champ.”
Promoter Del Sol Boxing Promotions also released a statement:
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Pedro Antonio Rodriguez. Our hearts go out to his loved ones. Out of respect for his family, we ask everyone to join us in awaiting the results of the official investigation.”
Rodriguez had a professional career spanning back to 2007, during which he competed in 44 bouts, holding a record of 15 wins, 26 losses, and 3 draws. The fight against Villa was his second of 2025, following a knockout loss to Ethan Perez in May.
