Ministry of Energy: We will provide electricity to 30,000 new citizens
The Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Mohamed Ould Khaled, stated that the emergency program for the development of Nouakchott will provide electricity to 30,000 new subscribers, helping to reduce the frequent “outages.”
In his speech at the launch of the program, which was overseen by the Mauritanian President, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, Ould Khaled confirmed that the government will rehabilitate and strengthen the low-voltage grid “15 kV” by building several electrical lines connecting various areas.
Ould Khaled added that his ministry will replace up to “40 kilometers” of medium-voltage cables, and that 40 new electrical transformers will be installed. He also mentioned the construction of “150 kilometers” of low-voltage overhead lines.
He pointed out that the electricity component of the program, which costs the Mauritanian state 50 billion Ouguiyas, will include public lighting projects extending for “112 kilometers” and the installation of 14 lighting units on the capital’s roads and corridors.
The total cost of the electricity component is approximately “5 billion and 261 million old Ouguiyas,” and the Mauritanian Electricity Company “Somelec” will implement it.
The emergency program for the development of Nouakchott, which will be completed within 16 months, is part of a larger program with a total cost of nearly 13 billion old Ouguiyas. The broader program aims to “enhance the networks and increase the number of main substations,” and will also help “supply consumption centers” and urban areas located “on the outskirts of the city.”
