CATL Announces Plan to Expand Battery Swapping Stations for Electric Vehicles in China

CATL, the world’s largest electric vehicle battery manufacturer, announced on Wednesday its plan to launch an extensive network of battery swapping stations for electric vehicles starting next year.

The idea behind battery swapping is to solve the problem of long charging times for electric vehicles, allowing drivers to replace a depleted battery with a fully charged one in just a few minutes, enabling them to continue their journeys without the need to wait for extended periods to recharge.

The Chinese company revealed its intention to open 1,000 battery swapping stations across China in the coming year, with plans to expand to 10,000 centers in collaboration with local and international partners. This move is expected to pose strong competition to the Chinese company Nio, which currently operates over 2,700 battery swapping stations and aims to reach 5,000 stations in the near future.

While Nio has 60 battery swapping stations in Northern Europe, the expansion within China is the largest of its kind globally. Government policies supporting the electric vehicle transition have contributed to accelerating China’s leadership in the field.

Robin Zeng, CEO of CATL, stated that by 2030, the market will see an integration of battery swapping stations, public charging stations, and home charging units. He emphasized the company’s commitment to working with partners to provide more convenient, safe, and economical services for customers, contributing to the promotion of a new lifestyle based on innovative electric mobility solutions.
