Mauritania Opens Tourist Season in R’Kiz Under “My Homeland, My Destination” Campaign

The Minister of Trade and Tourism, Zeinab Mint Ahmednah, accompanied by the Wali of Trarza, Ahmedna Ould Sidi Abba, officially opened the tourism season in the region on Sunday at the Jouakha tourist resort in the city of R’Kiz, under the theme “My Homeland, My Destination.”

In her address at the event, the minister said President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani’s call for citizens to discover their own country and spend their holidays in different parts of Mauritania reflects a broader development vision aimed at strengthening domestic tourism, stimulating local economies and transforming the country’s natural and cultural assets into economic and social opportunities.

She said the government, under the president’s guidance and the supervision of Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Djay, is working to turn this approach into a sustainable public policy.

According to the minister, the strategy includes developing domestic tourist destinations, encouraging investment in hotels and restaurants, upgrading tourist sites, developing oases, green areas and beaches, and improving facilities and services associated with the tourism sector.

She noted that last year’s experience demonstrated the ability of domestic tourism to stimulate economic and social activity while strengthening connections between different regions of the country.

The minister stressed that tourism represents an important economic and development sector capable of creating jobs and supporting local businesses and economic activities.

For his part, R’Kiz Mayor and President of the Association of Mayors of Trarza, Mohamed Ould Ahmedou, welcomed the decision to launch the tourism season from the Jouakha resort, describing it as a practical reflection of the president’s directives to promote domestic tourism and make better use of Mauritania’s national resources.
