The Governor of Inchiri, Moulay Idriss Ould Sassi Ould Akik, chaired a meeting on Wednesday at the Teachers’ Training School in Akjoujt, bringing together administrative authorities, elected officials, local stakeholders, and representatives of civil society organizations.
The meeting focused on preparations for the upcoming visit of President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani to the region.
Visit Aimed at Assessing Citizens’ Conditions
In remarks during the meeting, the governor stressed the importance of the presidential visit, which is scheduled to begin on the 24th of this month and will include the departments of Akjoujt and Benichab.
He called on all participants to work collectively to organize a reception befitting the President, while highlighting the importance of the ambitious development and social programs being implemented across the region.
The governor also reviewed some of the major projects carried out in recent years, noting that the emergency program for expanding access to basic services had provided a concrete response to several of the main demands raised by residents and had reached advanced stages of implementation.
Second Emergency Program Under Preparation
The governor said the government is currently preparing a second emergency program that is expected to be launched soon. The new initiative will seek to address remaining shortcomings and respond to the needs that continue to affect local communities.
He also outlined the various social programs and interventions implemented over recent years, particularly those targeting vulnerable groups.
Water and Electricity Remain Key Challenges
Regarding Akjoujt, the governor identified water and electricity as the two main challenges facing the city.
He said the electricity problem is expected to be resolved permanently in the near future following the commissioning of the high-voltage power station, whose construction has reached its final stages.
On the water supply, he said efforts would focus on finding a lasting solution rather than continuing to rely on boreholes, given the limited water resources available in the city.
According to the governor, the long-term solution would involve constructing a pipeline to transport water from Lake Benichab, providing Akjoujt with a more sustainable source of supply.
Residents Prepare for Presidential Reception
For his part, the President of the Inchiri Regional Council, Sheikh Ma al-Ainain Obeidi Al-Gharabi, affirmed the region’s readiness to welcome President Ghazouani.
He said residents were prepared to participate in mobilization and awareness efforts at all levels, with the aim of organizing a large popular reception in both Akjoujt and Benichab.
