Apple unveils new accessibility features powered by AI

Apple has unveiled a new set of accessibility features designed to make its devices easier to use for people with disabilities, with increasing reliance on Apple Intelligence, according to a report by TechCrunch.

The updates include improvements to tools such as VoiceOver for audio reading of text, and enhanced voice control, along with deeper integration of AI capabilities.

AI-powered accessibility features

The report notes that some of the new features rely on Apple’s AI systems even when they are not fully generative. One key upgrade allows VoiceOver to analyze images, text, and videos and respond to user queries directly.

For example, a user can take a photo of an invoice and ask the system about it, and the AI will identify the total amount and due date automatically.

Apple has also introduced new system-wide voice commands, enabling users to perform actions such as zooming in on the screen, turning on the flashlight, and controlling core device functions using only voice input.

Live translation and hearing improvements

A separate report from MacRumors highlights another upcoming feature that provides real-time translation of surrounding speech into any language, including translating video content directly on an iPhone without needing external subtitle files.

Apple is also improving integration with hearing devices, including alerts for users with hearing impairments when their name is called or when specific words are detected nearby.

The FaceTime app is also receiving upgrades that allow it to integrate directly with external translation apps, making communication easier for users with hearing difficulties.

New accessories and mobility support

Apple has announced a new range of global accessories designed to help users with mobility challenges hold and operate their iPhones more easily.

The company is also expanding support for Vision Pro, making it more accessible for users who rely on wheelchairs.

Purpose and expected release

These features aim to significantly improve the overall usability of Apple devices and enable developers to build more inclusive applications using Apple’s AI tools.

While Apple has not confirmed a release date, the features are expected to arrive with iOS 27, which is typically announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June and released in the fall alongside new iPhone models.
