Technical Glitch Hits ChatGPT and Disrupts OpenAI Services Worldwide

OpenAI’s ChatGPT service experienced disruptions on Tuesday morning, affecting a number of users as the platform began facing performance and response issues. Some users encountered error messages from the chatbot such as “Something seems to have gone wrong,” prompting many to share screenshots of the errors on the X platform, according to The Verge.

According to data from Downdetector, a website that tracks service outages, the issues began around 3:00 a.m. ET, gradually expanding to impact users across various regions worldwide.

Multiple Services Affected

OpenAI’s official status page confirmed that the disruption impacted several services, including:

  • ChatGPT
  • Sora, the AI-powered text-to-video tool
  • OpenAI’s application programming interfaces (APIs)

At 5:23 a.m. ET, OpenAI posted a separate update noting a spike in error rates specifically affecting Sora, and later categorized both incidents as partial outages.

The company later reported that it had identified the root cause of the problem and was working to implement a fix, stating that efforts were underway to restore full functionality to the affected services.

Not All Users Impacted

Despite the disruption, some users have still been able to access ChatGPT, though they reported the service being slower than usual and response times significantly delayed. Others noted no issues at all, suggesting the outage has not impacted all users equally.

Other Services Affected

The AI-powered search engine Perplexity, which utilizes some OpenAI models, was also affected. Its status page reported sluggish performance and elevated error rates. According to Downdetector, Perplexity’s issues began around 7:00 a.m. ET, likely as a result of the broader outage affecting OpenAI systems.
