The Ministry of Equipment and Transport, in the presence of representatives from security sectors, discussed a new traffic law on Wednesday.
This took place during a workshop organized by the ministry to review and approve the traffic law after “considering the observations and suggestions provided by participants,” as part of preparations for its adoption, according to the ministry.
Mohamed El-Amin Ould Cheikh Abdallah, an advisor at the Ministry of Equipment and Transport, stated that this workshop comes as part of the need to “revise the national framework related to the traffic law to achieve the desired goals in road safety, namely reducing road accident rates by 50% by the year 2030.”
The Mauritanian government has consistently amended traffic laws. In 2017, authorities announced a new traffic law imposing fines for certain violations, which sparked widespread protests at the time.
In 2021, the Mauritanian Parliament approved amendments to the traffic code aimed at reducing road accidents.
