What to Eat After a Colonoscopy: German Health Platform Offers Key Guidelines

The German health website Gesundheitsinformation.de reports that food and drink can usually be consumed immediately after a colonoscopy. However, in some cases—such as when large polyps are removed—patients may need to wait a bit longer before eating.

The platform explains that to protect the intestines and help restore healthy gut bacteria, certain foods should be avoided after the procedure. These include fatty or heavy meals, spicy dishes, fast food, and foods high in sugar.

Bloating is one of the most common symptoms following a colonoscopy. This occurs because air or carbon dioxide is pumped into the intestines during the procedure to expand the intestinal walls for clear visibility. Foods known to cause gas—such as onions, legumes, and beans—can worsen discomfort and lead to abdominal pain.

Easily Digestible Foods

After a colonoscopy, choosing foods that are gentle on the digestive system is recommended. Ideal options include eggs, rice, and boiled potatoes. Sweet but light foods such as semolina pudding, or yogurt lightly sweetened with honey or jam, are also suitable.

It is equally important to drink plenty of fluids, as the body loses a significant amount of water during bowel preparation. Hydration can be restored through water, tea, and diluted fruit juices. Soups—such as vegetable broth—also provide fluids along with essential vitamins.

A colonoscopy is a key diagnostic procedure that uses a small camera to examine the interior of the intestines. It helps detect or diagnose a range of conditions, including:

  • Colon cancer
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Celiac disease
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Diverticulitis (inflammation of pouches in the intestinal wall)
