Minister of Health Warns of Low Blood Donation Rates in Mauritania

Minister of Health Abdullah Ould Sidi Mohammed Ould Wadiha stated that the blood donation rate in Mauritania is below the global required average.

During a visit to the National Blood Transfusion Center, the minister urged citizens to visit blood donation centers and banks in the capital, Nouakchott, and across the country, emphasizing the importance of awareness and education in this regard.

According to data from the National Blood Donation Center released in June, Mauritania’s hospitals require 90,000 blood donors annually, distributed evenly across all regions.

As of mid-June 2024, the number of blood donors reached 26,331, with donations allocated between Nouakchott and the blood banks available in the country.

The center highlights that the demand for blood donations is increasing due to population growth, a high incidence of accidents, and rising cases of bleeding among pregnant women and during childbirth.

The World Health Organization reports that based on samples of 1,000 individuals, the average blood donation rate is 31.5 donations in high-income countries, 16.4 in upper-middle-income countries, 6.6 in lower-middle-income countries, and five donations in low-income countries.
