Apple Introduces
breaking upgrade for iPhone devices that enables users to send text messages via satellite, even when Wi-Fi or cellular network coverage is unavailable. According to “The Sun,” this feature will be available on the iPhone 14 and later models with the release of iOS 18.
This new capability allows users to send text messages to friends and family when there is no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. The company confirmed that the service is currently only available in the United States and Canada.
How Satellite Messaging Works
Apple previously introduced the “SOS” emergency service via satellite, which serves as the foundation for this new feature. Using the “SOS” system, users can connect to a satellite for emergency services. Now, Apple will enable the sending of regular text messages to friends and family using the same system, automatically activating the feature when users attempt to send messages without signal.
The service prompts users to connect to the nearest satellite, allowing them to send and receive text messages and emojis via iMessage and SMS. It’s important to note that text messages sent via satellite using iMessage are fully encrypted.
How to Use Satellite Messaging
Apple clarified that sending messages to groups and sharing photos or videos via satellite is not supported, and there may be character limits for text messages. To use this feature, users need to:
- Enable iMessage in their settings.
- Ensure that the person they are messaging has updated to the latest iOS version and is in their contacts.
- Confirm they have sent or received an iMessage recently in a chat with the intended recipient.
- Turn on the “Send as Text Message” option in settings under messages.
When trying to send a message without Wi-Fi or cellular signal, an automatic notification will appear, prompting the use of the satellite messaging feature. Users should also be outside with a clear view of the sky, as obstructions like dense foliage can impede satellite connection.
Keep in mind that sending a message via satellite may take a few minutes, and the recipient will see that the message was sent via satellite.
Who Can Use This Service?
Unfortunately, there are some limitations to this service. It requires the latest version of iOS 18 and is only compatible with iPhone 14 and later models. Additionally, the satellite messaging service is currently limited to users in the United States and Canada. However, the “SOS” emergency service is available in the UK, so it is likely that British users will soon receive satellite messaging capabilities in the coming days.
