UEFA Appoints István Kovács to Referee UEFA Champions League Final Between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) announced on Monday the appointment of Romanian referee István Kovács to officiate the UEFA Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan, scheduled for May 31 at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany.

Kovács, 40, brings extensive experience to the role, having previously officiated the 2022 UEFA Europa Conference League final and the 2024 UEFA Europa League final between Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen. He has also overseen seven matches in the current Champions League season, including the Round of 16 second-leg clash between Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain.

The Romanian referee is a familiar figure to PSG, having officiated several key matches for the French club in the Champions League, including:

  • The second leg of the quarterfinal against Barcelona last season (4-1 win for PSG)
  • A group stage match against Bayern Munich on November 26, which ended in a 1-0 victory for Paris
  • The second leg of the Round of 16 against Liverpool this season, which PSG lost 0-1

Since beginning his professional refereeing career in 2007, István Kovács has officiated 29 matches in the UEFA Champions League, solidifying his reputation as one of the competition’s most experienced referees.
