Mauritania’s 2024 Census Reveals Population Growth and Changing Household Dynamics

The results of the General Population and Housing Census in Mauritania, conducted at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024, reveal a decrease in the average household size from 6.2 in 2013 to 5.9 in the latest census.

Mauritania’s population has seen a significant increase, growing from 3,537,368 people in 2013 to 4,927,532 in 2024, with an annual growth rate of 3.1%. Of this population, females account for 51.8%, while males make up 48.2%.

Regarding age distribution, data indicates that children under the age of 15 represent 41.5% of the population, and the percentage rises to 53% for those under 20 years old.

The total number of households in the country is 834,354. Additionally, the results show that 75% of the population resides in communities with more than 500 individuals.
