Mauritania: A New Opposition Coalition Includes Figures from the “Historical Opposition”

Opposition political parties in Mauritania have announced the formation of a new coalition called “Coalition of People’s Forces” to “unite their efforts and achieve their goals.”

The new coalition includes figures from the “historical opposition,” as well as various movements, currents, and political parties in the country.

In a statement issued by the coalition, it was mentioned that the coalition was established after a “thorough study of our country’s situation” and the identification of the major challenges it faces, including “the fragility of democracy, undermining national unity, inefficiency and ineffectiveness of the administration, and the volatile regional situation.”

The coalition pledged to unite its efforts to achieve several goals: “strengthening national unity, ensuring the country’s political and economic sovereignty, respecting and safeguarding equal dignity for all, and working to strengthen the internal front in the face of the dangers threatening the nation.”

The coalition called for organizing “serious and open dialogue between all political parties to overcome the current deadlock in the country,” urging the government to “be serious and committed to implementing what it has previously agreed upon with the opposition.”

Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Agay had mentioned in the government’s general policy statement the organization of “a political dialogue that includes all political parties in the country.”

This was reiterated by the official spokesman of the government, Minister of Culture, Arts, and Relations with Parliament, Hussein Ould Amdou, who said that “the government is working on organizing an inclusive political dialogue that does not exclude anyone and does not prohibit any topic.”

He added that “practical measures in this regard have already started at the level of the National Assembly and political parties.”

The coalition affirmed its openness to all “parties, forces, and political currents that share the same vision and goals.”
