Signing of a Grant Agreement Between the Japanese Embassy and the Mauritanian Association for the Fight Against Epidemics

The Ambassador of the Empire of Japan to Mauritania, Mr. Uchida Tatsu Koni, and the President of the Mauritanian Association for the Fight Against Epidemics, Mrs. Koumba Alassane Diallo, signed a grant agreement from the Japanese government today, Tuesday, in Nouakchott, for the “Health Coverage Improvement Project in Kire Madik, a village near Rosso,” which will be implemented by the Mauritanian Association for the Fight Against Epidemics for the benefit of the city.

The project aims to provide healthcare services to the residents of Kire Madik, a village with around 6,500 inhabitants. Once completed, it will enable pregnant women to benefit from safe maternity services and will generally improve the health level of the population.

The financial allocation for this project, funded by the Japanese government within the framework of the Local Project Support Program for Human Security, is €66,078, equivalent to approximately 2.8 million Mauritanian Ouguiya.

This funding will allow the construction of a new building at the health center, the construction of a concrete wall, and the acquisition of some medical equipment.

In his speech, the Ambassador expressed his hope that the project would be completed successfully and achieve its intended goals, contributing to enhancing solidarity and friendship between the two peoples.

He added that Japan supports Mauritania’s efforts in the health sector, both centrally and regionally, as part of the efforts to combat poverty. This support aligns with Japan’s goal to improve healthcare services and strengthen human resource capacities to ensure that every Mauritanian has access to quality healthcare, in line with the priorities of His Excellency President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani in the field of poverty reduction.

For her part, the President of the Mauritanian Association for the Fight Against Epidemics explained that this long-awaited project by the residents of the village and nearby villages would contribute to addressing the issue of isolation and ease the provision of care for many individuals facing significant challenges in accessing necessary healthcare.

She added that the association highly appreciates Japan’s efforts, through its diplomatic missions, to serve the most vulnerable populations, emphasizing that the project will be implemented according to the terms of the contract, with respect for the commitments made with the company, as well as in terms of monitoring implementation and the supply of equipment.
