UK Intelligence Agency MI6 Launches Dark Web Platform to Recruit Spies

The UK’s Secret Intelligence Service, MI6, on Friday launched a new online platform on the dark web designed to create a “secure communication channel” for individuals who may possess sensitive information, with the aim of recruiting agents in Russia and around the world.
According to the agency, the platform — named “Silent Mail” — enables anyone with access to intelligence related to “terrorism or hostile intelligence activities” to communicate securely with Britain.
At the launch, outgoing MI6 chief Richard Moore addressed “potential spies,” saying: “Our virtual door is open to you.”
The UK Foreign Office had announced on Thursday that MI6 is seeking to recruit new agents, including inside Russia, through the launch of a dedicated dark web portal.
The new secure messaging platform, also referred to as “Silent Carrier,” will, for the first time, leverage the anonymity features of the dark web. It forms part of MI6’s efforts to bolster Britain’s defenses against global instability, international terrorism, and the activities of hostile intelligence services.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized: “As the world changes and the threats we face increase, we must ensure the UK always stays one step ahead of our adversaries.” She added: “We are now strengthening MI6’s capabilities with cutting-edge technology, enabling the recruitment of new agents for the UK — in Russia and across the world.”
