De la Fuente: Lamine Yamal is in perfect physical condition

Spain national team coach Luis de la Fuente confirmed that young star Lamine Yamal is in “perfect physical condition” to play a series of matches, following Spain’s 4–0 victory over Saudi Arabia in the second round of Group 8 at the 2026 World Cup.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, de la Fuente explained that Yamal’s involvement was part of a carefully managed plan:
“We had to see how the match would develop, but today was an important step for the future. He is in perfect condition, and it is good to keep him like this, with extra motivation.”
The coach added that the forward would have played longer if the match had been more competitive, noting that Spain’s early control of the game allowed the staff to manage his minutes carefully. He also confirmed that Yamal finished the first half “very happy.”
De la Fuente stressed that the Barcelona winger is now capable of playing full matches consecutively, while also praising Mikel Oyarzabal for his outstanding impact in the game. Oyarzabal scored twice and provided an assist, with the coach highlighting his exceptional influence on the team:
“He has an enormous impact on the national team that no other player in the world has. He was the first player in this tournament to score two goals and provide an assist in 24 minutes.”
The Spain coach also insisted that his team still has significant room for improvement ahead of a potential final on July 19, adding that the technical staff conducted self-criticism after the opening match draw and corrected several tactical issues.
Meanwhile, midfielder Dani Olmo said Spain’s performance felt much improved compared to their opening game, emphasizing the team’s confidence and belief in their playing style:
“We knew that if we played our usual way, the results and goals would come. We have the quality, we just need to show it on the pitch.”
