The appearance of Bashar al-Jaafari, Syria’s former permanent representative to the United Nations and former ambassador to Moscow, in a video filmed during Syrian journalist Akram Khuzam’s birthday celebration in the Russian capital has sparked widespread controversy and criticism among Syrians.
Al-Jaafari appeared in the footage alongside several figures associated with the former Syrian regime, amid a festive atmosphere that included singing, applause and the serving of sweets. The footage quickly circulated on social media, prompting angry reactions from Syrian activists and commentators, particularly given al-Jaafari’s prominent role as one of the most recognizable diplomatic figures representing the government of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for many years.
The appearance also raised questions about al-Jaafari’s whereabouts and activities since the fall of the Assad government, as well as the fate of several former regime officials who left Syria and settled in Russia following the collapse of the former government.
A Return to the Spotlight
The video brought Bashar al-Jaafari back into the public spotlight after a prolonged absence from the political and media scene. It also revived discussion about former regime officials who have remained outside Syria, particularly those believed to have made Russia their base following the fall of Assad.
Reactions on social media varied. Some users questioned the circumstances surrounding al-Jaafari’s presence in Moscow, while others criticized his participation in a celebratory gathering so soon after the end of the former regime.
Others focused on the presence of several figures associated with the former government alongside al-Jaafari, arguing that the celebratory scenes were particularly provocative for Syrians who continue to live with the consequences of years of war and authoritarian rule.
Sharp Criticism Over the Celebration
Several Syrian journalists, activists and political commentators joined the criticism following the video’s circulation.
Syrian journalist Haseeb al-Zeini said he initially could not believe that the person appearing in the footage was Bashar al-Jaafari. He criticized journalist Akram Khuzam for inviting al-Jaafari to his birthday celebration in Moscow, arguing that the appearance disregarded the feelings of many Syrians.
According to al-Zeini, Khuzam had reportedly justified inviting al-Jaafari by saying that he hoped to conduct an interview with him and was prepared to take on the role of a “devil’s advocate” during the conversation.
However, al-Zeini said that al-Jaafari attended the birthday celebration and participated in its festivities but ultimately did not agree to the interview. He argued that Khuzam had therefore lost the opportunity for the interview while provoking widespread anger among Syrians.
Al-Zeini also criticized what he described as the prioritization of journalistic considerations over ethical responsibility, stressing that journalism should remain connected to social responsibility and sensitivity toward the public.
Former Regime Figures at the Center of the Debate
The controversy extended beyond al-Jaafari himself, with many social media users focusing on the presence of other figures associated with the former regime at the gathering.
Political analyst Mahmoud Ahmad Hafez said that al-Jaafari, who had previously appeared in the halls of the UN Security Council and later served as the former government’s ambassador to Moscow, now appeared to have moved from official diplomacy to a very different public role following the end of his political career.
Syrian activist Omar Madaniah also sharply criticized the appearance of al-Jaafari and other former regime officials in Moscow, particularly the festive atmosphere shown in the footage.
The reactions come amid a broader debate among Syrians over the fate of former regime officials who left the country after the fall of Assad, particularly those who remain in Russia.
Questions Over Former Officials Living in Russia
Al-Jaafari’s appearance has also revived questions about the status of former Syrian officials living abroad, particularly in Russia, and whether figures who once occupied prominent political and diplomatic positions will remain outside the public spotlight.
Since the fall of the former government, Syrian activists and public figures have called for greater transparency regarding the whereabouts of former officials and for investigations into alleged abuses committed during the years of the conflict.
At the same time, information about the movements and current activities of several former officials remains limited, making their occasional public appearances a subject of significant interest and controversy on social media.
Who Is Bashar al-Jaafari?
Bashar al-Jaafari was one of Syria’s most prominent diplomats during the rule of Bashar al-Assad. He served for years as Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York and became a well-known figure during UN Security Council sessions and international discussions concerning the Syrian conflict.
During his tenure at the United Nations, al-Jaafari consistently defended the Syrian government’s position in the face of international criticism and participated in numerous Security Council sessions, negotiations and diplomatic discussions related to the Syrian crisis.
In 2020, he was appointed deputy foreign minister before later being sent to Moscow as Syria’s ambassador to Russia.
He continued representing the Assad government in Moscow until its fall in December 2024. Al-Jaafari subsequently disappeared from the public scene, amid reports that he remained in Russia.
His latest appearance in the Russian capital has now brought him back into the spotlight and renewed debate over former Syrian officials living abroad, at a time when accountability and the fate of former government figures remain highly sensitive issues in Syria’s evolving political landscape.
